SMTD Changes Age of Unaccompanied Rider from 7 down to 5

After considerations regarding students unaccompanied by an adult and under the age of 7 riding SMTD to after school programs, SMTD has changed the current fare structure. They have dropped the age of unaccompanied child rider from current seven (7) years of age and above to five (5) years and above at fare rate of $1.50 in the SMTD service area.

The proposed change would increase fares from current rate of free for children under seven (7) when accompanied by an adult, to $1.50 fare for unaccompanied children five (5) years and above in the SMTD service area. Children under age 5 with accompanied paying adult ride free.

Before this change was enacted, SMTD held two public hearings to consider written views, exhibits and other pertinent information. No public comment opposing the proposed change was received and the SMTD Board of Trustees at their Dec. 14, 2022 meeting enacted the new policy effective January 1, 2023.
